Most people who learn English, when asked about their goals, give the same answer: speak as the native. It is the finish line that many generations of learners have pursued, and it is also the reason not many people have stopped in the middle of the road because they feel they have never touched them.
Athenova claimed it was time to ask the question of the finish line. And that’s the starting point for The Non-Native Narrative: How We Learn and Use English, the first podcast series made by Athenova, is now present on Spotify and Apple MusicYeah.
A Different View of Learning Language
Through each episode, Athenova talks with guests from various countries and fields: teachers, university instructors, engineers, students, photographers, content makers, media workers. The only thing among them is that no one is born in the same English language, but all of them have created their careers, life and voice in that same language.
What Athenova cares about is not what level they’ve achieved, but how they think about language: how they learn, how they manage without words, how they deal with hearing without time, and what has changed in how they view learning after years of use of English in real work.
Opening Album – Pilot episode: The Story Behind Athenova
The starter for this journey was Vanessa Le, CEO and Founder Athenova.
Having graduated from TP.HCM with two majors in English and Russian grammar, she has had thirteen years attached to language education, passing through almost every form of teaching, from one-on-one tutorials to the winter class.
In the first episode of the poupid, she shares the story behind the birth of Athenova, of the gap she recognizes in the language educational market, and of why she believes that the role of the teacher today was so different in advance. When technology can explain any grammar point in just a few seconds, what students really need from a teacher is no longer knowledge, but guidance, soft skills and communication ability in real life.
She also re-references a platform question for the whole series: what really determines whether a person can get far with foreign languages. Her answer lies not in the curriculum or methodology, but in the way the learner thinks about the language itself. When you stop viewing perfection as a condition to begin with, the new learner has space to actually experience language, and that’s when progress begins.
The episode closed with an idea that perhaps many learned never thought of: The native language was never a barrier on the course of learning a foreign language. The languages are more closely related than we thought, and what we’ve already had from the beginning is holding part of the answer.

The Non-Native Narrative is done for people who are learning a foreign language, who are teaching, and especially those who are still waiting for their English to be good enough to dare to speak.
